I could not believe that Yonkers, NY, had been segregated until the late 1980s. I had to read the story of this courageous mayor who was in favor of public housing, but who received death threats and bullets in the mail for his position against the middle class, white residents who were vehemently opposed. The author describes the city planner's innovative design which called for small groups of townhouses with yards rather than multi-story apartment blocks, in order to provide residents with a sense of ownership. The opposition to the plan ultimately cost Yonkers several million dollars in fines, causing the shutdown of multiple city services and the city became bankrupt.
