Early Literacy Challenge | Elementary Challenge | Teen Challenge | Adult Challenge
The Wee Readers Summer Reading Challenge is designed for children who have not yet entered kindergarten or are not fully reading independently. This challenge is open to any child who resides in Scotch Plains, as well as any student attending a public SPF school with a library card (a library card is required).
- Registration begins on Tuesday, June 1st.
- Children can start earning prizes from Saturday, June 20th through Saturday, August 29th. The last day to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge is Monday, August 10th.
- Children earn a prize after completing 15 minutes of reading, attending a library program, or completing an early literacy activity five times. Upon completing the entire board, they will be eligible for a free book. All prizes and books are available while supplies last.
- Each child may participate in only one challenge per summer, and prizes can be earned only once. Participants are eligible for a maximum of five prizes and one free book.
- Prizes must be redeemed in person at the Scotch Plains Public Library.
The Summer Reading Challenge for Elementary Students is open to any incoming kindergarten through fifth-grade student who resides in Scotch Plains or attends a public SPF school (a library card is required).
- Registration begins on Tuesday, June 1st.
- Children can start earning prizes from Saturday, June 20th through Saturday, August 29th. This is the final day to pick up prizes and enter for a chance to win a raffle prize. Prizes are available while supplies last.
- The last day to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge is Monday, August 10th.
- Participants may choose one of the following options for the summer: Complete the SEL (Social Emotional Learning) Challenge, which includes both reading and SEL activities OR Complete the Reading Challenge by reading 25 books. Participants may only complete one challenge track and cannot participate in both.
- To earn a prize, children must complete five activities or read five books, depending on the challenge track they choose.
- Prizes must be redeemed in person at the Scotch Plains Public Library.
- All prizes (excluding raffle prizes) must be picked up by Saturday, August 29th before the library closes at 5:00 PM.
- Participants may only participate once per summer and are eligible for a maximum of five prizes and one raffle ticket.
- Raffle winners must claim their prize by Wednesday, September 30th. If the prize is not claimed by this date, the winner will forfeit their prize, and a new winner will be selected.
Additional Summer Reading Challenges (Not Library Sponsored)
The Teen Summer Reading Challenge is open to any incoming 6th–12th grade student who attends one of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public Schools or is a Scotch Plains resident. A library card is required to participate.
- Registration begins on Monday, June 1.
- Teens can begin earning prizes on Saturday, June 20. The final day to earn prizes, submit raffle entries, and pick up prizes is Saturday, August 29. Prizes are available while supplies last.
- The last day to register for the Teen Summer Reading Challenge is Monday, August 10.
- Participants will set their own personal reading goal for the summer. Teens will earn one prize for every 10% completed toward their reading goal, with the opportunity to earn up to 10 reading prizes.
- After completing their reading goal, participants can earn one additional completion prize, for a maximum of 11 prizes total.
- Once participants complete their reading goal, they may stop by the Library to enter one of our raffle drawings or email teens@scotchplainslibrary.org to request a raffle entry form.
- Participants may earn up to 8 raffle tickets total by completing bonus challenges throughout the summer. Bonus challenges include attending Library programs and participating in other special activities.
- Prizes must be redeemed in person at the Scotch Plains Public Library.

Adult Summer Reading runs from June 1 through September 8. Scotch Plains resident adult cardholders can enter our drawing for a gift certificate to a local business just by logging their reading! No registration required, just fill out our simple online form.
