Summer Reading Challenges

Early Literacy Challenge | Elementary Challenge | Teen Challenge | Adult Challenge


The Wee Readers Summer Reading Challenge is designed for children who have not yet entered kindergarten or are not fully reading independently. This challenge is open to any child who resides in Scotch Plains, as well as any student attending a public SPF school with a library card (a library card is required).

  • Registration begins on Tuesday, June 1st.
  • Children can start earning prizes from Monday, June 23rd, through Saturday, August 23rd. The last day to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge is Monday, August 4th.
  • Children earn a prize after completing 15 minutes of reading, attending a library program, or completing an early literacy activity five times. Upon completing the entire board, they will be eligible for a free book. All prizes and books are available while supplies last.
  • Each child may participate in only one challenge per summer, and prizes can be earned only once. Participants are eligible for a maximum of five prizes and one free book.
  • Prizes must be redeemed in person at the Scotch Plains Public Library.

The Summer Reading Challenge for Elementary Students is open to any incoming kindergarten through fifth-grade student who resides in Scotch Plains or attends a public SPF school (a library card is required).

  • Registration begins on Tuesday, June 1st.
  • Children can start earning prizes from Monday, June 23rd, through Saturday, August 23rd. This is the final day to pick up prizes and enter for a chance to win a raffle prize. Prizes are available while supplies last.
  • The last day to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge is Monday, August 4th.
  • To earn a prize, children must complete five different challenges.
  • Prizes must be redeemed in person at the Scotch Plains Public Library.
  • All prizes (excluding raffle prizes) must be picked up by Saturday, August 23rd, before the library closes at 5:00 PM.
  • Participants may only participate once per summer and are eligible for a maximum of five prizes and one raffle ticket.
  • Raffle winners must claim their prize by Tuesday, September 30th. If the prize is not claimed by this date, the winner will forfeit their prize, and a new winner will be selected.

More information coming soon! The Summer Reading Challenge for Teens is open to any incoming sixth through twelfth graders.

This year we are running two summer reading challenges: The Reading Log and The Bingo Card. Participants can choose between the two challenges to earn raffle tickets.

  • Register via the Beanstack website. All Scotch Plains residents and SPF district students entering grades 6-12 are eligible to join.
  • The teen summer reading challenge runs from 6/1 through 8/16. Winners will be drawn and notified on Monday, 8/18.
